The 1979 debut that turned a Venice Beach bohemian into an overnight sensation, Rickie Lee Jones is a smoky, jazz-inflected love letter to drifters and dreamers. With her raspy, offbeat delivery and beatnik storytelling, Jones spun tales of hustlers ("Chuck E.'s in Love") and late-night loners ("Last Chance Texaco") into a boozy, cinematic world. Producer Lenny Waronker framed her freewheeling poetry in warm, loose arrangements—brass sections sighing, pianos tinkling like barroom ghosts. A Grammy-winning triumph, the album defied the slick disco era with its ragged charm, landing Jones on Rolling Stone’s cover in a red beret. More than a hit ("Chuck E." went Top 5), it announced a singular voice—part Kerouac, part Joni Mitchell—who turned life’s back-alley vignettes into timeless song.
