Vs. arrived as the fastest-selling album in history (950,000 copies in five days), its raw, bristling energy ("Go," "Animal") a deliberate middle finger to fame’s machinery. Vedder’s lyrics seethed with distrust ("W.M.A."’s police-brutality rage), while "Daughter"’s acoustic ache and "Rearviewmirror"’s cathartic roar showcased the band’s expanding range. Recorded in isolation (with producer Brendan O’Brien), its stripped-down ferocity—no solos, no frills—felt like a purge.
