By 1998, the grunge wars were over, and Pearl Jam—now elder statesmen—embraced a hard-won serenity with Yield. Gone were the clenched fists of Vitalogy; in their place, anthems like "Given to Fly" (their "Going to California" moment) and "Do the Evolution"’s sardonic swagger. Jack Irons’ drumming lent a newfound groove, while "Wishlist" proved Vedder could still break hearts with just an acoustic guitar. Recorded as a democracy (a first for the famously fractious band), Yield felt like a exhale—less rebellion, more reflection. It debuted at #2, outsold by Titanic, but its legacy endures: the sound of a band making peace with the spotlight, one soaring chorus at a time.
