🎹 EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER – Works Volume 1

A bold, double album of solo showcases and symphonic ambition

📀 Album Overview
Release Date: March 17, 1977
Label: Atlantic Records / Manticore
Format: Double LP (4 sides)
Length: Approx. 87 minutes
Genre: Progressive rock, classical crossover, art rock
Produced by: Greg Lake (mainly), with orchestral and technical collaborators
💡 Concept
Rather than a typical group album, Works Volume 1 is divided into four parts, each side of the vinyl featuring one band member’s solo work, with the final side being collaborative band tracks.

It’s essentially three solo albums in one, followed by a unified return as Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
🎼 Structure: Four Sides
Side A – Keith Emerson
🎹 Piano Concerto No. 1

A full original classical piano concerto, written and performed by Emerson
Backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Divided into three movements:
Allegro Giojoso
Andante molto cantabile
Toccata con fuoco
🎻 This is a serious, ambitious orchestral work—no rock elements—intended to establish Emerson as a classical composer in his own right.

Side B – Greg Lake
🎤 Orchestral Ballads

A suite of melodic, romantic songs, written and sung by Lake
Lyrically rich, with texts by Peter Sinfield (ex-King Crimson lyricist)
Orchestrated with lush string and brass arrangements
Highlights:
Lend Your Love to Me Tonight
C’est la Vie (the most famous track; features accordion and orchestration)
Closer to Believing
🎶 These tracks are more accessible, focusing on melody, emotion, and vocal delivery.

Side C – Carl Palmer
🥁 Instrumentals and Percussion Showcases

A mix of jazz-rock instrumentals, classical adaptations, and percussion pieces
Includes:
The Enemy God Dances with the Black Spirits (based on Prokofiev)
LA Nights (funky fusion featuring Joe Walsh on guitar)
Tank (a reworked version of the ELP debut track)
Food for Your Soul and New Orleans
🥁 This side shows Palmer's range beyond drumming—into arranging, band-leading, and even guitar!

Side D – Full Band
🎸 Emerson, Lake & Palmer together again

Fanfare for the Common Man – Aaron Copland adaptation turned into a powerful rock anthem
Pirates – A nearly 14-minute cinematic epic with orchestra, telling a full pirate-themed narrative
One of their most theatrical and ambitious tracks
🌊 “Pirates” and “Fanfare…” are often considered two of the most grandiose pieces in the ELP catalog.
