Released in 1987, this self-titled debut introduced David Johansen’s flamboyant alter ego, Buster Poindexter—a lounge-singing, tuxedo-clad persona far removed from his punk roots with the New York Dolls. The album’s breakout hit, "Hot Hot Hot" (a cover of Arrow’s soca anthem), became a party staple, blending calypso rhythms with Johansen’s raspy, theatrical delivery. Tracks like "Smokin’ in the Boys Room" and "Heart of Gold" further showcased his playful reinvention, mixing R&B, jazz, and cabaret camp. Though polarizing for fans of his raw punk past, the project highlighted Johansen’s versatility and showmanship. A cult favorite, Buster Poindexter remains a quirky, fun-loving time capsule of 80s downtown NYC nightlife.
